This book should be required reading for all Mormons.You cannot pretend to have empathy for people on the gay spectrum unless you have friends, relatives, or workmates who are gay, or you have carefully read books in an effort to understand their situation. It's my guess that a good chunk of Mormons cannot claim this.
I did not really understand exactly what it was like for people who are gay within the church until I read this book. So many essays -- first-hand accounts of Mormons who were raised in the church only to discover as young children, high-schoolers, or adults that they were gay. Most essays were by people who dearly want to remain in the faith. A few were from those who had left in an effort to live a more authentic life. I'm pretty sure all had considered suicide. Most made huge efforts to remain in the church. Some of the men entered into mixed-orientation marriages, but many of those marriages did not work. Some did.
I admire the work that went into this book. I greatly admire the people who work so hard to remain members of the church, against all odds. I also admire the ones who left the church, to pursue relationships that provide love and happiness.
This book would be incredibly helpful for members of the church who experience same sex attraction, or for their parents, or especially their bishops. People DO NOT CHOOSE this orientation as a "lifestyle." They are born this way. They try so hard to to align themselves with the church and not be gay ... but it doesn't work. They are what they are, and members of the church should love them and accept them.

I wanted an insight into the subject as a non-Mormon and given that church's odious actions regarding Prop 8. This is a collection of life stories that I ultimately found depressing.There are a few stories of people who learned to accept themselves but an awful lot of "I accept myself but I will remain celibate for the rest of my life" stories. I am still not sure if the sampling is really representative of the gay Mormon community or if it is a subversive attempt to get a message across. I will give the author the benefit of the doubt but if you are looking for something affirmational - this probably isn't it.
Still, I learned a bit more about Mormons and knowledge is always a good thing to have in the arsenal.
It is good to have a broader view of SGA and see how people react and cope differently with it.
This book is incredible. The different real accounts from real people are at the same time inspiring as they are heart-wrenching. The best way to understand the challenges facing members of the church that experience Same-Sex attraction (SSA) is to listen to those people. Here is the opportunity. Here there is a sampling of many people. Active members of the Church, former members, inactive members, married, and those married to those facing SSA. Some of the experiences are not as well written, nor as poignant or inspiring as others. However some are incredible, Brent Kerby's story is especially inspiring, and very well written. The book avoids negative feelings, and is not critical of church. The actual experiences of each person is shown, some of which reflect somewhat negatively on the Church, but many show support for the Church, or at least a recognition of what the Church has done for them.
Overall it is an excellent, balanced, positive, and honest approach to the issue of homosexuality within the Mormon Church.
This account is from a diverse group of men and woman with various backgrounds, although all share a common thread of reconciling their sexuality with their Mormon religion. Easy to read and kudos to Brent Kirby for collecting and editing these stories.
hope and inspiration?! i thought this is one of the most depressing books abouts mormons and gays i have ever read. some of the people in the book sound hopeful, but many sound sad - marrying and living a celibate life hardly sounds like believing God loves and accepts you as you are. I guess we are all entitled to our own opinions, and this is mine.
Good perspectives and diversity on a topic not readily available so applause to Brent Kerby and his supportive mother for collecting these stories. Would have liked a more professional eye to have edited the manuscript. In the kindle version, the pictures were distorted.

This book, because of how it is titled, written, and discussed, gives so many opinions. You won't find specific answers, but you'll get the stories of REAL people that are so important. There are men and women who want to be celibate, want to get married to the opposite gender, and those who believe that being gay is who they are. This book is your best bet to discover what someone as a gay member of the church goes through and might inspire. If you are the parent of a gay child, read this book and see what we go through! It's so difficult and it may give you some insight that'll help your child develop. You don't want your kids to go through drug problems, depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, attempted suicide, and successful suicide. It's so common and you NEED to be aware of what your child is thinking and going through!!!!!
